Summertime is here and between the air conditioner, the pool filter and the ceiling fans, our electricty bill tends to be a lot higher during this time of year. I’ve put together a list of 10 things you can do to save money on your electricity bill.
Curtains – Keep them open in the winter to let the sunlight in and warm up the house. Shut them in the summer to keep the sunlight out.
Unplug electronics – Did you know that electronics use electricity even when they aren’t in use? Yup! Try your best to unplug items that are not in use like the toaster, curling iron, lamps, etc.
Use a clothes line – I didn’t realize how popular clothes lines were until I asked the people on my Facebook page, turns out a lot of you are already saving tons of money on your electricity bill by using a clothes line.
Use a programmable thermostat – Set your thermostat to 68 degrees when you are home and 65 degrees when you are away. You will save between 1 to 3 percent on heating costs for every degree that you drop.
Air Conditioning Unit – Be sure to install it in the shade. Installing the unit in the sun will cause the air conditioner to work harder and use more energy.
Use your oven, dryer or dishwasher in the morning or at night when the outside temperature is still cool. Doing this will prevent unnecessary heating of your home during the warmer hours of the day.
Take a shower instead of a bath, believe it or not, you’ll use less hot water
Turn off the ‘automatic dry’ setting on your dishwasher. Allowing your dishes to air dry will save you on heating costs.
Use glass and ceramic dishes when cooking and baking because they hold heat better and you can lower the oven temperature by at least 25 degrees when cooking.
Wash all clothing in cold water
