Now, as a frugal blogger I have a love/hate relationship with warehouse clubs. I hate them because most things are overpriced and I know I can get them cheaper with a coupon and a sale, but I love them because they are a treasure trove of goodies, free samples and *some* good buys! Below you will find the 7 items that I recommend buying at a warehouse club like BJ’s, Costco or Sam’s Club!
Meat – You’ll usually find a good and inexpensive selection of meat at your local warehouse stores. If you have an upcoming party or want to stock up these can be some of your best prices. For example, my local Sam’s Club has chicken breast on sale for $1.88. This price only comes around at my grocery store about every 4-6 months. So if I run out of chicken breast and it’s not on sale at my local grocery store, I’ll usually head to Sam’s club to pick up a couple of family packs.
Laundry Detergent – The old adage, the bigger the unit you buy will yield the best per unit price rings true for laundry detergent at the warehouse clubs. The fact that these don’t go bad, means you can buy a bottle of laundry detergent the size of a gallon drum and have it until it runs out!
Liquor – You knew this was going to be on my list, right? Buying beer and liquor at the warehouse can save you a bit of money which is great when you are having a picnic or bbq and need several bottles of liquor.
Tires – Warehouse stores offer the most competitive deals on tires. You will pay a lot less by buying your tires at a warehouse club like Sam’s club versus taking it to a special tire shop.
Electronics – You know those Black Friday prices that we all stand in line hoping to get? Well you can usually score yourself a decent deal on TVs at a warehouse club and you don’t even need to stand in the freezing cold to get it.
Baking Goods – Items like flour, sugar, baking soda are good bets at warehouse store because they have a long expiration date and we use them often. Buying in bulk is suggested for these items and getting them at a discounted bulk rate at stores likes Costco, BJ’s & Sam’s club is a good idea.
Paper Goods – If you aren’t going to use coupons, then buying your paper goods like bathroom tissue and paper towel at a warehouse club can be your only shot at getting a decent price. My stock up price is $.25 per bathroom tissue & $.50 per paper towel roll, if you can find a deal priced around those guidelines, stock up!
Diapers – Listen, as a new mom, I understand how little time you have which is why I don’t expect to chase down every diaper deal that comes out. So if you find yourself out of diapers, a run to the local warehouse club will usually be your best bet. The only thing to be careful of is that your child may grow out of the diapers before you use that giant box, so be careful to get the right size!
The point of the warehouse clubs is to save you money by buying in bulk, but as you see above there are really only a handful of great deals. So the next time you are at da club ;) pay attention to unit pricing to ensure you are indeed getting a great deal!
