Last year, when I was pregnant with Finley (my 3rd baby) we had taken a birthing class at our local hospital. Yes, it was my 3rd child…but since it was Peter’s first baby, we thought it was a good idea to take it! Well, besides all the wince-worthy birthing videos we watched the one thing that I did learn was that insurance companies now have to PAY for breast pumps thanks to the Affordable Care Act!

I decided to call my insurance provider to find out more information. I called up Harvard Pilgrim member services and asked if my insurance policy covered breast pumps. The nice woman checked my policy and assured me that I was covered.
I had two options:
1. I could rent a hospital-grade breast pump for 3 months and it would be full covered…OR
2. My doctor could write me a prescription for a breast pump which I could keep. The only clause was that I had to purchase the breast pump from an in-network vendor. There were 2 in my area!
This is was literally the best news I’ve heard all year! So ladies, take that breast pump OFF your registry and call up your insurance provider and ask about your benefits. You may be entitled to a FREE breast pump!
Update: I got my breast pump, read about it here!
