Save On Groceries At Home
Saving money on groceries is an everyday battle. But not only are there ways you can save on groceries when shopping but there are things you can do to save on groceries at home as well. Here are some things that can help you save on groceries at home before you ever go shopping.
Grow It Yourself
Not everyone can have a huge garden but anything you can grow yourself is something you don’t have to buy. You can grow herbs in a windowsill, tomatoes and peppers in a pot or have a small raised bed for fresh salad things. Shop farmer’s markets for local produce too.
Don’t Be Wasteful
We live in a throw away society and it can even be reflected in our eating and grocery habits. Don’t throw leftovers away. Just a handful of chicken left, put it in a salad! I keep a Ziploc bag in my freezer and put in small bits of leftover meat and veggies for in soup. Stretch your meat. Buy and cook a roaster chicken, use the leftover meat for salads or a casserole then boil the carcass for broth or soap.
Skip Convenience Foods
Ready-made meals seem so convenient don’t they? But it really doesn’t take much longer to make the same thing from scratch yourself. Pasta and beans are easily made from scratch. Create your own TV dinners. Learn to can and preserve foods are make and freeze your own convenience meals. Freezer crockpot meals or once a month cooking are both great options!
Meat at Home
Many cities are now allowing chickens to be raised inside city limits. You can raise them to eat or for eggs. Meat goats are a wonderful option and are a “dark” meat like beef. You can also get a milking goat. Wild game is a very good option if you live where hunting is available. We enjoy deer meat year round and other wild game such as elk, rabbit, squirrel, pheasant, and quail are great choices.
Cook Around Your Pantry
Take stock of your pantry before going out and buying more. Plan your meals around what you already have. This will also help make sure you use older goods up before they go to waste. Pinterest is full of wonderful ideas. Just put in chicken and pasta and watch the recipes pop up!
Freeze or Can
If you have a freezer you can really save on groceries at home. Freezing your own convenience meals, stocking up on meat on sale, freezing wild game – the options are endless. Even a small freezer can help you save big. Learning how to preserve food by canning can really stretch your groceries as well. Even if you are only making jams, jellies or salsas you are saving money and enjoying healthy foods you made yourself.
Eat At Home
A big money saver is simple eating at home. While we don’t often consider eating out as part of our grocery budget it can take its toll over all. So don’t get caught up in the rat race of grabbing fast food on the way home. Use your servants!! We all have them. A crock-pot, instant-pot or oven can be huge time savers and can help you avoid spending money because nothing is set out for dinner and you are running late.
