Should I Buy My Sunday Paper or Order Coupon Inserts online?

Just recently my local Sunday paper increased in price by a whopping $.75 cents to $2.50! Now, if you are like me and only buy the paper for the coupons..this is a HUGE increase! I recently got a question on Facebook, that I thought I would address in this blog post, because it does apply to you if you are buying Sunday papers just for the coupons.

“So I have recently stopped purchasing the Portland Press Hearld because its price went up to $2.50 each. Should I continue to bite the bullet and purchase the newspapers or… will I be able to using those clipping sites and printables to get me by?”

Option #1: Buy Whole Coupon Inserts Online

You can get whole coupon inserts online through sites like GetCouponInserts & WholeCouponInserts for around $.50 – $1.00 per insert. Depending on how many inserts are in that weeks paper and how much your local paper is, it may be less expensive to purchase them online.

For example: has a Combo Pack of 6/16 Inserts (10 Redplum & 10 SmartSource) priced at $17.99. If I were to buy 10 Sunday papers at the new price, I would pay $25.00. I would save a whopping $6.00 by purchasing the inserts online.

Option #2: Buy Individual Clipped Coupons Online

If you are the type of couponer who just does a few deals here and there or are pretty brand specific, it may be a good idea for you to consider buying individual coupons rather than an entire insert. Sites like MyCouponHunter or CouponThingsByDede both offer a selection of clipped coupons ranging anywhere from $.10 to a $1.00 a piece depending on the value of the coupon.

One of the sites has a Combo Pack of 6/16 Inserts (10 Redplum & 10 SmartSource) priced at $17.99. Dont forget to add Shipping Cost Up to 35 inserts $5.75. Total of 23.74$ to purchase online!
If you were to buy 10 Sunday papers at the new price, you would pay $25.00.
So, you would not save $6.00 by purchasing the inserts online. I am not sure, why author didn’t mentioned it?… Or is it a special price or some people?

The dollar store is now selling the newspaper on Saturdays with all the coupon inserts… $1.04 is not bad.

Don’t know if I should say this out loud or not but I got the Maine Sunday Telegram at Hannaford on Sunday for 1.75. I don’t know if there system hasn’t gotten changed to the new price or what but I was pleasantly surprised.

My local paper offers a really good deal for Sunday subscribers: $99/year for 5 papers, for 52 weeks. So that works out to be way cheaper than buying 5 Sunday papers each week at $2 a piece! I do that and then order any additional coupons I might want from a clipping service.
So always call your local paper and ask about any deals they may offer to receive multiple copies of the Sunday edition.
