You Never Think It Will Happen To You…

April 3, 2012 by CC 62 Comments

This is where my laptop used to be :(

Yesterday my house was broken into during broad daylight. My dead-bolted antique door with the lead glass was busted down by the foot of some cowardly hoodlum. Inside they rummaged through everything in the house, every drawer, closet, cupboard. The thieves took off with my two laptops, my wedding ring and most importantly my nana’s diamond ring…all in all they robbed me of $10,000 worth of my personal belongings.

I’m in shock. I’m scared. I’m trying to put on a brave face for the kids but I am literally beside myself with fear. I’m trying to comfort myself with the fact that it could’ve been worse or that nobody was hurt, but I can’t help feeling like I’ve been violated in the most personal way.

The police were called, fingerprints taken and all I can do now is pray that something shows up at a pawn shop or that they catch the thief…but all of that is doing little to unrattle my nerves.

Thank you for your support for those that have emailed me. I may be off for a little bit today to decompress, but I will be back!

I am so sorry to hear that Chrystie. I know how you feel. I still to this day am uneasy since our house was broken into 4 years ago and thousands of dollars of items were stolen. You do feel violated and can’t believe that someone has entered into your private space. It will take some time before you will come home and not feel that worry. But you will get past it. Unfortunately there are people out there that just think of themselves and not the lives that they affect with the actions they take. I hope they catch them.

I’ve been there..One of my son’s schoolmates broke into our house while we were on a trip. The ipods and electronics were a bummer but losing the items that have “meaning” was rough..they took my class ring, my husband’s grandfather’s pocketwatch and a 21 diamond ring that my mother in law gave me that her husband gave to her on valentines day in 1976. They never found my stuff (thank pawn shops in Vegas-one on every corner) but my son definitely beat the you know what out of the kid-worst part Vegas cops couldn’t prove anything since the kid didn’t have the stuff but the kid was bragging about it at school

I am in NH and the same thing happened to me last week . To come into your own house and find that some stranger has gone thru all of your drawers and personal belongings is a very frightening feeling indeed. I am still trying to figure out what is actually missing, it seems they were looking for cash and perscription drugs. ( I do not keep anything valuable at home) I would suggest that you get yourself a safe deposit box and from now on put anything of any value in it . Hugs to you I know exactly how you feel.

My laptop loaded with priceless photos, (that I never had backed up-will not make that mistake again,) was among the stolen items as well. Since the break in my husband and I have documented all of our important items and have taken security way more seriously! Good luck to you! :(

That’s so awful. This happened to us, in broad daylight as well & my husband was upstairs napping and woke up to find the thief. I was at a bridal shower with my kids (thank GOD) and of all things, my husband called ME to say someone’s in the house. I was close to home, so left the kids at the event and pulled in the driveway to see my hubby carrying the creep out of the house by his NECK! I called 911 on the way to my house, so the Sheriff was pulling in right behind me. I seriously though my husband was going to kill the guy…it was just unreal. Unfortunately/fortunately, we knew the thief and he was put in prison. (small town)

To help our kids get through the nightmare, we made a big deal out of new door locks, and bought them funky colored keys with really cool keychains. The kids were middle school age. We also did a bit of counseling for each of them, just to make sure they processed this situation ok. Some police departments have an education person that could come to your house and talk about safety plans, too.

So do whatever you need to do, to feel safe. Change locks, get an alarm system, a large dog…whatever. We now have 2 blabblermouth fluff dogs – but I don’t care – barking is a warning!

    Thinking of you.

I know exactly what you are going through, unfortunately…Our home was robbed several years ago. Thankfully, the thief was not destructive–just took my laptop, my son’s wallet and some of my jewelry (about $10,000 worth of stuff). He was caught and is in jail and was charged with 30 other robberies. Some of the jewelry and my laptop were recovered, so there is hope that you may get some of your things back. My advice to you is to gather any photos and/or any kind of identification for what was taken because that is how I got some of my items back. But, prepare yourself for the process–I had to deal with 3 different town police stations and the sheriff’s office to track down the photos and/or items of things that were recovered…Also, don’t assume that your case is at the top of their priority list…Keep following up on this with the police. Do go to some pawn shops and look for yourself–you never know what you might find…Good Luck and I wish you the best in getting your peace of mind back :)

To this day I get depressed when something makes me think of what I lost. People say they are only material things, but they were memories of years of my life. I’m so sorry, Chrystie. My car was broken into a few years back and I, too, felt violated . . . and it was just my car. I couldn’t imagine if my house was broken into. It will take some time for you to get over this but I know you are a strong woman and you can get through anything you put your mind to. Just look how far you have come in the past few years, you own your own company, your incredible at saving money with coupons, and you have two beautiful children that adore you. I met you at the coupon seminar you had in Lewiston last year and I can tell that you are a very strong woman. Hang in there and I hope everything works out for you. Lynne
